This paper presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of the design features, technical characteristics, and current development trends of spiral screw conveyors for bulk materials that are widely used in agricultural production. An analysis of modern conveyor system designs and the specific features of their application for conveying grain, compound feed, seeds, mineral fertilizers, feed mixtures, and other bulk materials was conducted. It was established that spiral screw conveyors are characterized by structural simplicity, compactness, high reliability, a sealed conveying process, the capability to transport materials in horizontal, inclined, and vertical directions, as well as relatively low operating costs.
A comparative analysis of conventional screw conveyors, shaftless spiral screw conveyors, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, and chain conveyors was carried out according to productivity, energy efficiency, structural complexity, conveying tightness, and suitability for operation under the conditions of Ukraine's agricultural industry. Current design solutions for mobile and stationary conveying systems were summarized, and the specific features of screw conveyor applications in grain cleaning complexes, grain elevators, feed preparation systems, livestock production, and post-harvest processing lines were analyzed.
Particular attention was devoted to the analysis of modern electric drive systems and automated control systems for spiral screw conveyors. The operating principles of adjustable electric drives based on induction slip couplings, automated variable-speed control (AVC) systems, and variable-frequency electric drives were examined, and their advantages in terms of improving energy efficiency, reducing dynamic loads, and ensuring the stability of conveying and technological processes were identified.
Based on the generalization of previous research findings, a comparative evaluation of the technical characteristics of conveying systems was performed, relationships between conveying capacity and design and operating parameters were established, and the specific energy consumption of different conveyor types was assessed. It was determined that the most promising solution for the conditions of Ukraine's agricultural production is represented by shaftless spiral screw conveyors equipped with variable-frequency electric drives, which provide increased conveying capacity, reduced energy consumption, improved operational reliability, and adaptability to different physical and mechanical properties of bulk materials. The obtained results can be applied in the design, modernization, and operation of modern conveying and technological systems for the agro-industrial sector.
