The article presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies of the technological process of cleaning the heads of table carrot roots directly in the soil before digging. The specific features of the two-stage harvesting method for table root crops were analyzed, and it was established that insufficient removal of haulm residues from carrot heads leads to increased crop losses, deterioration of marketable product quality, more difficult operation of digging units, and a higher risk of mechanical damage to the roots. To improve the efficiency of the technological process, the design of the combined OGK-1.4 unit was considered. In a single pass, the unit performs cutting of the haulm, crushing and transporting the plant mass outside the working zone, as well as two-stage cleaning of root heads. A distinctive feature of the unit is the use of two consecutively installed cleaning shafts equipped with rubber whips of different stiffness: rigid whips for preliminary removal of the main mass of haulm residues and soft whips for final cleaning without damaging the root surface. A mathematical model of the interaction between a rubber whip and the root head was developed, taking into account the rotational speed of the cleaning shaft, geometric parameters of the working body, whip mass, and the height of the root head above the soil surface. Experimental studies were carried out on the Olenka and Shantane carrot varieties. It was established that increasing the rotational speed of the cleaning shafts improves cleaning quality but simultaneously increases the probability of mechanical damage to the roots. For the Olenka variety, a rational rotational speed is about 400 rpm, whereas for the Shantane variety it is 450-500 rpm, providing cleaning quality of up to 99.5% with root damage not exceeding 1.2%. The obtained results can be used to improve harvesting machines and substantiate the operating modes of root-head cleaning devices.
